The community is in mourning after a local rugby league legend was killed in a car crash into his home on Christmas Day.

Russell Klein, 55, was allegedly attacked outside his home in Milmerang, Toowoomba region, Queensland by a driver who drove into the property around 9:30 pm.

Paramedics were called to his home and tried to treat the seriously injured man, but he tragically died on the spot.

Queensland Police say the 30-year-old driver of the vehicle fled on foot after the crash.

A man was soon found at a nearby property and is currently cooperating with the police investigation.

A neighbor told The Chronicle that he heard a commotion between two people at the address before hearing a loud bang and a call for help.

Neighbor Maureen Saunders claimed to have heard a lot of “shouting and arguing” and walked outside after hearing a bang.

She ran to Mr. Klein’s house and found her father buried under the house.

She tried to extract him with the help of another local, as a third resident called emergency services.

He died around 9:30 pm when the driver rammed his car into his home.

Sanders told the publication:

“I give him a Miter 10 gift card every Christmas to say thank you for doing my nature strips, but I didn’t get to give him this year.”

Klein was known throughout the Toowoomba region for his deep involvement in local rugby leagues.

He played for the Pittsworth Danes, Milmeran Rams and Inglewood Roosters during his league career.

He returned to the Pittsworth Danes and played football with his sons in 2018.

“How many bastards get the chance to play football with their two sons? It’s the best you can do,” he told Queensland Rugby League.

The Detective and Forensic Crash Unit are investigating the circumstances of Mr. Klein’s death.
